    The knitting community is getting frustrated with AI slop too. I found it interesting to see the details spelled out and how the same patterns in slop repeat themselves in different contexts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuIJs9ZndYQ&t=72s

      @malte

      The problem is always going to be that what it does is make something that looks right to someone who doesn't really know better. Whether that's a knitting pattern, an image a recipe or some code.

      Which is almost ok if you do know what you are doing and can adjust it or ignore the obviously wrong bits etc.

      But what compounds the issue is people seeing it as some kind of get rich quick scheme, generating books or websites full of worthless slop and pretending they are good information.

        So if I come along looking for a knitting pattern, with no idea what I'm doing, I can't tell the good, accurate and human made stuff from the slop, because I don't have the skills to do so.

        Repeat across all areas of knowledge and pretty quickly you degrade and erode the collective sum of human knowledge, making it increasingly more difficult to find accurate and correct information about anything.

        And that's before you accidentally train your AI on the output of other AIs...

          @adaliabooks @malte Future generations will have to discard anything from 2022 to when the genAI bubble collapses as potentially tainted. Separating wheat from chaff will not be doable.

            @malte I don't know anything about knitting. I love this video.

            Excellent discussion on Large Language Models. Amazing to combine it with knitting.

            Would love to share it with my grandma...

              @pmakholm @malte Your grandmother would totally recognise the old style knitting patterns (from magazines and yarn companies) full of “until desired length”, “decrease evenly”, “if needed”. And agree that the LLM is drunk, confused and stupid 🫣

                I think there's a Ravelry group, and there is definitely a Reddit sub, dedicated to knitting them for shits and giggles.

                Etsy is a huge offender. It must be very difficult for new knitters to know it's slop.

                  @adaliabooks @malte it's my impression it's not always possible to tell the recipe is bad before you've spent hours upon hours knitting the thing
