THE BIG TECH RESISTANCE

Alongside 7 other Nordic countries, the Danish government has just signed a “manifesto” calling for resistance against Big Tech (heavily motivated by worries over children’s welfare).
Digitalisation of Danish society has been like a rushed and mindless construction boom. Nothing wrong with “buildings”, but opportunistic frenzies leads to short-term solutions and asbestos in the walls. It’s high time for a rethink.We can argue about the details, but for the broad picture: Sign me up.

@jonassmith So maybe next time some ministry try breaking free M$, they will actually mean it?

@anderslund I think that particular story was a weird mess altogether. Also, while we may be far from breaking monopolies perhaps we’re are not too far from a world where alternatives exist and are considered legitimate.

@jonassmith
I think that particular story shows that doing so requires a a lot - leadership, stamina, planning, patience, creativity. More than was put into it. And that it is embarrassing that they just gave up, instead of regrouping.In any case, it is good if the ambition survives unsuccessful attempts.

The Marienborg Manifesto: https://stm.dk/media/vdhjmmae/marienborg-manifest_engelsk.pdf@jonassmith that is unbelievable - as in "did I really just read that, with those signatures on it!?". I worry about the focus on age-limits - I mean, the mind-poisoning algorithms and AI isn't only affecting children - but overall I'm all there for this level of resistance specifically towards tech-giants.

The Marienborg Manifesto: https://stm.dk/media/vdhjmmae/marienborg-manifest_engelsk.pdf@jonassmith this feels more like prep age verification and chat control N to me though... and if the big techs happily say "yes we will age check and scan messages!" will they consider them "regulated"?

@jonassmith@PythonLinks @jonassmith governments, not countries. And 8, not 7. Though did you really have to use deepseek for that when they're *literally* at the top of the first page of the manifest?

@markiejiang Let’s hope not

@anderslund I think a lot people wanted a project to exist which really didn’t. Anyway: I agree that these efforts need commitment. It’s a little bit like democracy in that regard.

I find it weird, that the climate is not mentioned at all (It is my greatest worry when it comes to tech and the future generations), but I suppose they wanted to focus on the mental health for this manifesto

@snue yeah, I suppose there’s room for more relevant manifestos

@markiejiang @jonassmith Seems likely. They've identified some real problems, but the solutions they're going for are probably harmful. So the good reasons are being used to sell bad solutions, like how child safety is often used to sell awful solutions in general.

@markiejiang @jonassmith But hey, I hope I'm wrong. But their focus on children alone instead of the general problem makes be think I'm not. The platforms can continue their awful practices, but must try to ensure children are not subjected to them, resulting in more data collection and less anonymity.
Also the things the platforms that doing that harm children most often harm adults as well. So the solutions should be general, not age-specific.
