"The content of the majority opinion was devastating, but so was the timing. I knew that the decision would be bad, but I had hoped that the Roberts Court would at least have the decency to wait until the end of the term in June — not drop this bombshell in the middle of primary season."

"A multiracial democracy cannot be defended by a narrow constituency. It requires a broader, deeper coalition that spans race, gender, class, geography, religion, and identity."

    ~ Bryan Fair

The purist games that play minority community against minority community — games to which progressives all too easily coalesce: these play the game right-wingers want to see played.

"Whatever we call it—Jim Crow 2.0, the John Roberts Jim Crow Era, or the John Crow Era—no person in America is more responsible for the return to the Jim Crow Era than John Roberts. The resurrection of the post-Civil War Jim Crow brand of racism is the crowning achievement of John Roberts’ life work" (continued in /9)

      @wdlindsy
Good Lord, I wish I could boost this article more than once.

Robert Hubbell is one of the few white pundits out there actually meeting this moment. It made sense to hold the line and hope for incremental progress when we were trying to prevent the horror show we're in now. But we're past that point. The only right response now is full steam ahead for major reforms, chuck anybody out who will not do their part. Anyone not moved by all these deaths in ICE custody and abroad must go.

And really not just anything to do with ice and how out of control they are. But the whole shebang everything that Trump has done and been allowed to do.

And I have a feeling that even if the Democrats take over a lot of what he's done will remain.

Yes, a social media post was too short to list all the atrocities, of course. And it's true that when the Dems take over we are still going to have to be all over them like a dirty shirt, or some of them will indeed just hem and haw and lick boots. That's the obvious pivot for the billionaires-- the people throw out the Nazis, so they'll work with the Vichy Dems. It is on us to prevent that in primaries.

The protest crowd is millions strong and enraged. It can be done.

Gene Weingarten notes that historians consider the Taney court the worst Supreme Court in US history. But:

"Now consider the John Roberts court. It is politically fractured. It has dispensed hell from day one, almost unfailingly enforcing a right-wing activist political agenda. It is absurdly partisan and morally corrupt."

"This week’s ruling was not a one-off. It’s the logical endpoint of a decades-long effort to disenfranchise minority voters and keep minority representation to an absolute minimum.

The three longest-serving conservative justices on the court right now have a combined 75 years on the bench. This is their pet project. They own it."

@mason I understand the reasons some people object to Substack and I support the move to demand more of Substack. That said, i cannot find it possible to imagine that Heather Cox Richardson, Joyce Vance, Paul Krugman, Robert Reich, Danielle Moodie, Joy-Ann Reid and a slew of progressive commentators who publish there are pro-Nazi. I intend to keep reading those and many other valuable commentators on an imperfect platform — and keep looking for the perfect platform, without finding it.

@wdlindsy If they're as progressive as all that, you'd think they might take note of the platform's problems and move elsewhere.

Is it possible that they have more interest in monetizing their brands than making a difference and leading by example?

I've heard this "perfection is unattainable so we're going to look the other way" sentiment from too many people. I usually hear it from people in the context of Harris committing to supporting the genocide in Gaza, or from folks who don't mask because vulnerable people aren't a big concern.

                      It's a kind of solipsism.
