Yes, that works just fine. I did it on two different servers when I changed my name.

PS. this was a few years ago, but I really doubt it should have broken since then.

Yes you can, but you will need to log out between each step when you change between old and new accounts.

If it makes it easier to be logged into both at the same time, use Firefox, its container tabs feature will allow you to be in both at once by using two different containers

You can change the display name by just editing your profile, but there's no official way to change the username (the one shown below the display name).

The username is used at a deeper technical level so posts mentioning you are sent to you. It's kind of like an email address.
