I know a woman who just retired and does a lot of interesting crafts - ceramics, sowing, book binding and gardening - and she's tired of Meta. I think she would be an interesting addition to the craft community on the fediverse - and for all others who like to see images of craft. What platform (Mastodon, Pixelfed) and especially instances specifically would be an appropriate place for her to join?
@malte It's going to depend a bit on what she wants. If she's more interested in a beautiful photo feed and not so fussed about missing text posts then Pixelfed makes sense, if she's more into conversations then Mastodon or the many alternatives.
Server-wise I don't know of any creative-specific Pixelfed ones. https://fedi.garden/tag/art-crafts-and-creativity/ has a nice list of others, and of course I am biased towards sunny.garden.
(I've also put in a lot of effort to make sure as much craft content as possible federates with us here, so that wouldn't be a concern despite us being quite a small server)

@malte there's Mastodon.art, which seems to be a broad art, including crafts, instance

@malte her work is beautiful

@malte Are people still picking instances based on their location or interests?
I'm thinking they should be more interested in hashtags. That's how I find a lot of people involved in the arts I like to play around with. #bookbinding #silversmithing #PaperArts #reading #writing
@mlanger Yes people are and by the nature of the fediverse probably will continue to do so. The more people represented on your instance interested in that particular hashtag, the more posts in it you'll see and be seen by, incl. from users on other things instances.

@malte we have a lot of artsy folk and cool people here on sunny, its a good neighborhood
@SarraceniaWilds Do you mind tagging some? I'm curious

@thegiddystitcher She's mostly in to the visual side and not so strong in English, so on the surface Pixelfed makes sense. My main concern is that it is less federated and that most of the user base still uses it as if it was Instagram, e.g. only liking things and rarely boosting. The Pixelfed I know of seems less mature to onboard in that way.

@malte Yeah it's definitely a lot more of a "broadcasting" vibe rather than actually connecting with people, I think. With plenty of exceptions though as always!

Maybe the best answer is just to show her around both, if you're able, and just see which one sparks the most interest?

@malte Which language/s she is using on Meta? She could use the same/s on here?

@Demosthen How do I find akkoma?
@malte@radikal.social Here is Akkoma and information about it in brief - https://akkoma.social .
Here is the list of servers, sort by active users and register the one you like - https://akkoma.fediverse.observer/list
But I advise these servers as the best in moderation, nice community, high activity and original design:

@Demosthen Thank you. Would you say those instances are likely to be a good place for a person 70+ years old with no previous experience of the fediverse?
