    @FantasticalEconomics @SrRochardBunson @floridamarx They also pretend to teach something objective & factual, which they also very much don't - they like to pretend that their "laws" are like the laws of nature; money flows just like fluids, if this, then that etc.

    This is not the problem, though - the problem is that we let them. These self-righteous nutbars have infected every level of society, posing as experts & coopting policy, with alarmingly scarce pushback...

    @jwcph

    Fully agree. Despite what they preach, the choice to: maximize profits, pursue economic efficiency, and think that growth is good are very value-based, normative ideas. So far from the objectivity they claim to value. Even how these terms are defined and quantified require normative choices.

    It is definitely a problem we don't push back on it. I also want to acknowledge how much has been invested by the uber wealthy to push this doctrine. Many econ and business schools are funded by right-wing ghouls like the Kochs.

    This is not to say we shouldn't fight against it, just recognizing the tilted playing field we play on, as with all things that attempt to fight the system and those with power entrenched in it.

      @jwcph @FantasticalEconomics @SrRochardBunson @floridamarx Unfortunately at least in the UK the media have almost all bought into this mindset. Their economics editors and business editors opine on every political/economic/business story from a starting point that corporate growth is desirable, government spending is wasteful and externalities that threaten our existence can be ignored. They will kill us all.

        business school isn't actually teaching you a science. It's teaching you an ideology.

        It exists to produce the managerial class - enforcers of capital who normalize the idea that "profit" is the natural goal of human existence, rather than a parasitic extraction.

        @floridamarx meanwhile the accounting students are laughing their ass off at that ridiculously simplistic definition.

            @floridamarx marketing programs are equally trash.

            They are about coercion, and feeding into insecurity, making insecurity, exploiting insecurity, and how to lie and sell nothing of real value. It’s rarely about creating better customer experience.

            @floridamarx@mastodon.social @JoBlakely@mastodon.social its about creating a better customer experience when that's what gives you a better market share and/or perceived value

                @EricLawton @floridamarx unless your business is a worker-owned cooperative, it's inherently unethical!

                    @floridamarx

                    economics teaches that it's an indicator of market inefficiency, demonstrating that the system we're supposed to have democratically chosen and managed for the benefit of all, is failing us.

                        @masukomi @floridamarx And the engineering students are confused why anyone would think such a simple equation using only fixed-point rational number variables is useful to anybody. No matrices, quaternions, or multivectors anywhere. Not even one single-variable integration.
