Just had a passport control at the Danish-German border again. I showed them my Danish national ID (sygesikringskort and driver's license) and they told me that wasn't good enough. I reminded them that the border is between two Schengen countries. They insisted that I specifically had to show them a passport. After questioning them for a while about where in the Schengen laws I can educate myself, and them giving me nonsensical answers, I resign and find the damn passport.
This reminds me that I'm still crossing my fingers for some quick and dirty advice from @jon on how to talk to these border guards. If I could cite the actual passage of the treaty where it says that national ID card is sufficient, that would be a strong argument. (Hope you don't mind me continuing to nudge you)

Within Schengen you have to be able to produce a valid Schengen ID when asked by police etc. Passports and national IDs that cover all the requirements (e.g. listing nationality)are options, but drivers licenses are usually not. This is part of the Schengen agreement.Some countries have decided to trust some forms of ID from some other countries (I think Nordics are fine with each other's drivers licenses) in addition to this.

@maswan Reading it it does say that there has to be specific reasons for a temporary border control so it's not entirely up to each individual country.
