This night is special to me in the yearly cycle. It is the darkest day around the sun and this year the night is even darker as it coincides with a new moon. Theoretically, that should happen something like every 29-30 years (the lunar cycle).

I have traveled to our winter house in the forest. It is the place I personally know in my region where light pollution is the lowest. It gets really dark here. Sometimes when I go outside in the night, I can't see my own hand in front of me. When you normally live in a country that is perpetually lit, this is a rare experience. Being in this dark place on the darkest day of the year on a new moon, I sense the power of the darkness. I'll go out later and let it wash over me like a bath.
