@malte i think this kind of thing is an understandable response to the reply guy swarm. which is made worse by fedi timelines being subjective because reasonable people will all reply the same thing honestly thinking no one else has said it.

ive noticed this "stay out of my mentions" posting to be almost exclusively by popular and respected people and reeks of elitism. ive even scene people do it performatively to signal they too are cool
harrassment is fucked up but if your major complaint is ignorant people spamming you the mute button is right there and you clearly have enough followers so go semi private

@malte and in this case often replys are not for the OP but for people reading the replies. sometimes it adds clarity and correction and another opinion
lets say someone says "trans people suck" and i respond "fuck you". the op doesnt like it but i posted it for other people to see my opposition. now imagine its just a harmless opinion "i love red socks" whats wrong with replying "go bears". the op might not like it but also i dont think anyone would say its fucked up. why is it different for academic topics?

@glassresistor You probably got the essence when you said you don't think anyone would say it's fucked up, but the OP will probably not like it. It's really up to you - and us - what we will do with that information.
