If you have 6 minutes to spare over the next few days, you need to watch #JonStewart on #TheDailyShow dissect the current #AI frenzy.

Why is late-night satire examining this reality with far more critical rigor than the very institutions whose job it is to study, regulate, and safeguard the intersection of tech, politics, and society? It is striking to watch those tasked with protecting the public stand at the front of the line, ready to blindly buy whatever tech billionaires put on the shelf..

@wlaatje I have noticed that I get more accurate and higher quality news from "comedians" than I've seen in ages from any "proper news" sources.

The "free" press is a joke, and unlike the comedians', the joke isn't funny.

@ZDL I try to explain that more and more people will be showing up at their desks, demanding accountability for decisions already made and those yet to be made.

And this is largely not driven by niche knowledge, specialist outlets, or expert analysis. Instead, it is driven by things like satirical TV shows that attract a million viewers in the Netherlands.

As a result, the number of people who want to understand how we got here and how we are going to get out of this situation, is growing.

@wlaatje Even if Musk's ideal future without jobs comes to pass, Musk has no reason to extend this beyond the US. The rest of the world can then work in the mines to gather the required materials to feed the machine, or something.

@wlaatje Curing diseases would be good, but it seems rather hypothetical, not demonstrated even as a blue-sky project, and killing an expected 1-2 billion people seems rather a high price for a speculative benefit

@wlaatje US media is not allowed to turn a critical eye to AI (among many other things) because it’s owned by people who have a vested interest in AI succeeding.

Watch thru to the end for the devastating conclusion. 🤣

@qurlyjoe @wlaatje Showing us that stakeholders are (almost) never unbiased.

@wlaatje It was fun seeing him ripping at them, but he missed most of the real damage they're doing. We already know they're a sham intended to centralize wealth. Let's talk about the cognitive impact, the environmental impact, and the criminality inherent in their training.
