That was one of my favourite interviews I've done about Reflect Orbital. The journalist (who it turns out has a background in optical engineering) actually had to stop the interview when I explained that Reflect Orbital's mirror is really, truly just a stretched piece of mylar and go on a rant about how incredibly stupid this whole plan is.
Now if only someone with power to stop Reflect Orbital would have that same reaction...
Oh look another Reflect Orbital interview request in my inbox. SIGH.
But I will keep doing as many of these interviews as I possibly can. Because Reflect Orbital is an incredibly stupid, awful, destructive, dangerous idea with no measurable benefits.

Thank you for doing this very important work! It's such a service and I hope you feel appreciated and can also get rest and do other things that recharge you.

@sundogplanets
No use for solar "farms" either due to three issues:
* Even x6 moonlight is too dim. Even an overcast sky gives some power.
* Too short a duration.
* They plan to charge. daylight is free.Battery costs (LiFePO4 may last 20+ years) have also fallen so much it can be worthwhile even to store cheaper off-peak grid electricity at 3am in latitudes with poorer solar power in winter.
Reflect Orbital only is a stupid toy for rich party goers. Or a complete scam to fleece investors!

@raymaccarthy @sundogplanets my bet's on scam.

@sundogplanets I had to stop and google it. I didn’t know it was a company. I thought it was about cloud covering.
Some guy on the Volts podcast said (about geoengineering clouds) that we’ve been doing it unintentionally for a long time with coal and some other power plants and could try to do it intentionally. -

@sundogplanets So, honest question, how do they protect the mylar from being torn apart by random space crap?

@colorblindcowboy They won't. It'll get shredded quickly. And then be a big floppy reflecting thing. It'll be great.

@raymaccarthy @sundogplanets ah yes but if you can reflect light you can also cast a shadow and then charge to move it away. Just think what a business opportunity that is to charge for free daylight that would of got earth if not the space junk.
I'll get my tinfoil hat.

@raymaccarthy @sundogplanets I have friends here in London doing the 3am thing already...

@raymaccarthy @sundogplanets ok but what if you need to melt a hotel made of ice really quickly, in order to stop a famous MI6 agent from getting away in his modified BMW

@beaiouns @sundogplanets
Ha!
Something other than Reflect Orbital. Maybe hypergolic rocket fuel or magnesium flares or something.If it's a modern BMW then ECM can kill it.

@sundogplanets What’s their attitude control system? Sunlight pressure should have quite an accelerating effect on mirrors so large.
