While many alternative search engines to Google still rely on Google or Bing's search index, it's still worth making the switch.

@ronsboy67 @kagihq Nice

@Tutanota @ecosia @Qwant @kagihq @StartpageSearch @duckduckgo From what I can read Qwant primarily use their own index. https://betterweb.qwant.com/en/2023/09/18/web-indexing-where-is-qwants-independence/
@Anders_S @Tutanota @ecosia @Qwant @kagihq @StartpageSearch @duckduckgo for French searches yes, for others not so much. Some time ago it was possible to tell by using the report results button. However it seems the button is gone
when it let you select individual results, they were from Qwant, if it forwarded you to Bing they were, well from Bing. -
@Tutanota @Mojeek is my favorite.
Focuses are very great because most of the time, you know what websites you want to request.
If you specifically know the website you want to browse, use the search integrated in that website if it exists (you can add shortcuts in your browser so "mdn span" redirects you on MDN website directly on the search results for "span"). If no integrated search exists, use "site:<url>" in Mojeek as you did with Google.
Where Mojeek isn't good enough yet, is for relevance of searches and it is especially annonying when you don't know where you want to end up. But if you think closely, most of the time, you know. For these, use Mojeek first. There's about 50% chance you'll get your result. If you don't find just go to Duckduckgo or something else thanks to shortcuts buttons provided by Mojeek who are humble and do not think they can be satisfying 100% of the times and let you switch quickly to another search engine.
Edit: if you can read French or if your translation is good enough to follow my blog article about searching information on a polluted web : https://garden.plaws.fr/rechercher-des-informations-sur-un-web-pollue

Is that a Russian flag under Start page?
I’ve been trying out the Vivaldi browser and that’s the search they use. -

I mainly search in swedish which is a small language. I am pretty sure they have no index in swedish. But that probably goes for every search engine except Bing and Google. It seems to me that Qwant and Ecosia are the best alternatives anyway.

I believe if you add &k1=-1 to your search URL it also removes ads

@egzuits
Ah, good. Although some of the other comments here are making me a bit leery about it too. -

@jackgedge Ah, great tip - I have adblock on most devices but not everything so I will definitely use this, thanks

@jackgedge @roddie I have ad-blockers on every device.
And a pi-hole at home between me and the interwebs.
I have stopped using devices that make it difficult for me to block adverts.
-
@roddie @rguy In the old days of Firefox you could go to the add-ons website and "install" a search engine.
But only if someone had taken the time to make the particular variant you wanted.
In those days I used to have multiple DDG search engines in Firefox to allow me to search in different countries.
That is until Mozilla changed how search engines were displayed in the search field drop down menu making it was no longer possible to differentiate between the different instances of DDG.

@the_wub @jackgedge I use browser-based adblockers and a Pi-hole as well but I do remember seeing an ad result from DDG recently, I just can't remember which device
