Individuals and groups who own car retail and manufacturing pour money into the campaigns of pro-car/road representatives at every level of U.S. government. As a result, more funds are appropriated for projects and studies that lead to building out, and using more land for, wider roads that accommodate bigger and faster cars.
Couple this with the marketing strategy of selling big trucks as “manly” or “powerful” even when they are functionally inappropriate for the most common use-case: daily commute, and you have larger masses at higher velocities closer to where pedestrians would exist under natural circumstances.
At that point it’s no mystery why more pedestrians are killed by cars here.
