Funk is coming back. I repeat The Funk is Returning.

I didn't really notice it, just seemed like a musical style or a reference, but so many songs have that funky sound now, and every little band has some guy with the saxophone or other brass instrument instead of just electric guitars.

The thing about a funk band is there is *no upper limit* to the number of brass players you can add. The bands of the 70s just kept expanding in size until they were orchestras.

    Will it happen again?

Funk has sometimes kept our nation from falling apart:

The music chuds who have been saying "hip hop is dead" are missing the real story. Hip hop, like punk can never die. Or it is always dead again and again over and over.

But this thing where you have a cute girl with nice vocals a funky beat and some guys playing brass?

I've never seen so much of it in my life, and I was not alive in the 70s

      George Clinton shall rise again.

@futurebird Hey, Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins are still alive!

And Nile Rodgers (though I think he would be more disco than funk, but the borders are vague.)

@futurebird It takes me back to the music of my childhood, dimly remembered feel-good songs of the late 70s and early 80s.

@futurebird No theoretical limit, yes but in practice there's a problem, and it's the same one the Big Bands of the 1940s all ran into - good horn players like to get paid, and so they should, but that makes things extremely expensive and the gigs few and far between.

@futurebird all music is improved by adding brass, and I say that as a string player. I suspect the replies to this might give us a good soundtrack for today's listening!

I really hope so. I miss songs with a powerful brass section.

@futurebird@sauropods.win hopefully this time around they bring some fisarmonicas in as well. That instrument deserves a bit of time in the spotlight.

I discovered Redtenbacher's Funkestra a few years ago and this will be the track when I walk in to provide congressional committee testimony

@venya @futurebird there's a surprising amount of white people doing good funk... I've been listening to these for a few years too:
