@quinn Fun Fact: The late sci-fi author and tech writer Jerry Pournelle actually did keep a gun next to his terminal. Many, many years ago I helped him with his CP/M system at his home that he used for his writing, and it was impossible not to notice.
@lauren I was the designated sci-fi nerd at an indie bookshop in santa barbara in the early 90s, i babysat the sci-fi authors as a 20 year old. all of them were some level of skivy, except ray bradbury, who was an old nerdy guy and fucking saint.

@quinn That'd be a fun read. Is it published somewhere?
@pwloftus uuuuuuuuh yes. where is a good question.

@SilverArrows @quinn
I don't own a dm printer since the half of the 90s, but I used one at home since a couple of years after the release of that song.
Their noise (and quality) made me move to inkjet and lasers (when economically accessible). -

@michaelgemar @lauren oh there were plenty of gross libertarian tech bros back then. i was kinda one of them. I became violent and thick skinned, so it was perfect for a career in tech journalism

@quinn Ray was a great guy. I'm so glad that I met him. We shall never see his like again.

@quinn Oh, man. That's fabulous. I looked at my ISP's router recently to see what all was connected and was blown away by all the xxxx. We went from cable to IPTV and the internet kept dropping, so I wondered if we were overloaded with devices.
I'm an obsolete techy and became pretty afraid of what was coming when in the early 2000s when our medical records were being put online (not for us - for the data thieves) and it just got worse from there.
-
@crazyeddie you can get dumb printers, i have one. but they're not as fancy and don't have colors. but honestly i have a business in france, that printer gets a workout.
@quinn care to recommend a dumb printer for those interested?

@quinn @farrisswisher That's only regarding the fact that a lot of them print out crap to help ID the printer that did the print and it's only about one technique for doing so.

@quinn yeah I don't know about that, fam. I've got a home lab that's sick AF.

@crazyeddie @farrisswisher well i did say the situation had got worse, which is also what the EFF says. my best recommendation is accessing some public printer somewhere with a lot of users.

Yes. This!
The more i got educated about Tech/IT the more shit flew out of our house.I am back to analog solutions, no smart Home shit anymore. It is all gone ( Alexa, Smart heating Controll,...) and the Smart TVs are the next that is going.
My Computers are allowed Internet Access on my terms. Same goes for my phone.
Everything else reverts back to the old ways.
And i feel more free than ever. -

@quinn @farrisswisher Weird.
I thought I was the one suggesting the library and it was you who were suggesting one could go buy a "dumb" printer.
I get confused these days.

@quinn
Me: I don't want to use your app.
Them: Oh its really easy...
Me: I know, I don't want to use it.
Them: Its so easy, would you like me to show you?
Me: No, for the third time. I won't tell you again. I don't want to use it precisely because its so convenient. I know how it works and its not private and probably not even secure.
Them: well, there is no need to be like that about it.
Me: ... -

@crazyeddie @farrisswisher dumb but traceable, talking about something a bit different from there we started. i don't use printing much these days, and when i do it's usually stuff we're sending to the government with our names on the docs.

@quinn Out of all the pieces of hardware to keep, this person kept their printer???
Those things are constantly trying to call home and rewire themselves to keep you from using unapproved ink. That's the official story of what they're doing anyway--who even knows if that's true. They're like the last thing I'd keep around. You can go to the library and use a printer. You probably have to anyway because you're out of ink. You just bought ink yesterday but you're out.
WTF with the printer?
@crazyeddie@mastodon.social not if you buy yourself a Brother monochrome laser and don’t hook it up to your network :3
