I have a jar full of hops that I picked and didn't properly dry so they got slightly moldy and not suitable for consumption.

I have a jar full of hops that I picked and didn't properly dry so they got slightly moldy and not suitable for consumption. But they have seeds! So I want to sprout them. I put them in in potting soil, and then I read on the internet that they need cold stratification. Is this true? I grew hops from seed a few years ago and didn't do anything actively to give them a cold treatment, but it's possible I picked the hops late.

I dumped the pot with the hop seeds and put the remaining hop seeds (I have quite a lot) in a plastic bag and put it in the fridge. I saw some web sites suggest you put a slightly damp paper towel in there, but I didn't.
