And most land is public land! A lot of green space that would legally be the private property of the nearest building in the US is public in Amsterdam.

#amsterdam@0xabad1dea I had the opposite culture shock when moving from continental Europe to the UK. The notion of "public space" is much more restricted there (most roads are rights of way on private land), and the idea that many green city squares in London aren't even publicly accessible feels unacceptable to me.

#amsterdam@0xabad1dea that's our one complaint about Haarlem - not a lot of public parks spread throughout. The nearest to me is a strip park with a hedge separating it from a highway. Niet gezellig
Besides the big parks on the outskirts, there isn't a lot of green space.
