Just remembered I have an account here after someone posted a mastodon thing on bluesky.

@Louiestowell Anything we can do to help it make more sense?
@slowe actually yes! Can you recommend hashtags to follow for if I want to talk about publishing, children's books, comics for kids, reading for pleasure/national year of reading...? I've tried the "on the nose" ones and there's nowt. But also other interesting hashtags that have lots of activity and chat esp NON US stuff in english (cos everything everyehwere is so US dominated).

@Louiestowell yes!
The people you follow would appear on your Home feed, which should be the main feed you see when you open your app. Without knowing which app you use, I don’t know specifically. Also, this website is pretty good at helping people get started: https://fedi.tips here is the Mastodon account you could follow too @FediTips
Hashtags will also be your friend. You can follow them, which will put them into your Home feed.

1. Follow @FediTips! It's a wonderful account that will get you up to speed fast.
2. Fedi Groups and Newsmast Channels may be helpful to: A) follow to find content you like, and B) tag to promote your work to interested followers.

I hope it's good home for you this time around.

@Louiestowell You will see posts from people you don't follow if:
A) Someone you follow boosts that post.
B) You follow a hashtag on the post.
You can mute or block people if you want to remove them from your home feed.
You can also go to an account you follow and hide boosts from that account.
I hope this helps!

@Louiestowell I'm not sure I know of good hashtags for book stuff but I've asked people I know for suggestions.
I haven't really followed many hashtags myself (only #parkrun) because I get enough activity from people I follow (and "Trending" on the web interface and "Explore" on the Mastodon app).
Some hashtags that I notice other people using in my stream are #catsofmastodon (cats), #caturday (people's cats on a Saturday), #mosstodon (moss etc), #SilentSunday (photos), #UKpol (UK politics).

@Louiestowell It might be that @FediTips has tips on good (children's) book/comics/reading related hash tags?

Hi Louie
If you want help getting started, I've done a website providing help for new people at https://fedi.tips (especially the "Quick Start" section at the top of the page).
If you have any specific questions feel free to ask, I am trying to provide unofficial tech support on here

You might want to follow !@bookstodon which is a discussion group about book-related topics. After you've followed it, you can post to the group by mentioning it and it might be a good place to ask about hashtags?

Yup, agree with all this.
This is what you see in your feed:
-Posts from accounts you follow
-Posts shared by accounts you follow
-Posts with a hashtag you're followingYou can check which hashtags you're following by various methods depending on how you access Mastodon. If you're on the official mobile app go to your profile page and click the # icon at the top. If you're on the website click the "Followed hashtags" option.
