How do you explain to someone who doesn't know much about social media what Mastodon or the fediverse is?
Mum mainly scrolls through Facebook, X & Instagram & occasionally posts/shares things on Facebook.
I'm not very good at explaining things, so I thought someone on here might do a better job.

If I had to do this really briefly, I'd say something like:
When you make a phone call, you can call people even if they signed up with a different phone network.
Mastodon is trying to do the same thing for social media. You sign up on a Mastodon server, but you can follow and interact with people who signed up on totally different Mastodon servers.
