Sometimes I see posts in my timeline from people that I don’t follow, with hashtags that I don’t follow. The posts aren’t boosted or anything. Does anybody know why? @FediTips ?

@BarneyDellar the fact that the example toot was of a cat made me smile. Perhaps your feed doesn't meet the mandatory cat quota?

@BarneyDellar I think it is to do with your view settings. There is a fully federated view which gives you everything your server is federated to, not just your own follows etc.
Someone who knows should be along shortly

@walkermatt I do follow some cat hashtags, but not the ones in that toot! I’m not complaining about more cats, I’d just like to know why I’m seeing it.

@thirstybear Nope, I just checked and I’m on my home timeline. I can’t really cope with the local and federated timelines!

@BarneyDellar Interesting. Maybe worth reporting a bug to whoever built your Mastodon client?

What are you using to access Mastodon?
The only way things can end up in your timeline is if you're following them, or if they're boosted by someone you follow, or if you're following their hashtags.
Sometimes hashtags may be a bit hidden as the ones in the middle of a post are in the normal font but the ones at the end of a post are shown below the main message in a smaller font. A few apps don't even show the smaller font tags, I'm wondering if this is your case?

@walkermatt Ah, it’s been edited! It used to have the Caturday hashtag, which I _do_ follow!

That would only show the reply in the main timeline, not the toot itself.
