    “Soon it will be virtually impossible to be online in the UK without handing over identity documents or biometric data to unregulated companies.”

    The social media ban means EVERY user has to prove they're over 16. This puts millions at risk of their personal data being hacked.

    @openrightsgroup @JamesBaker

    This policy was a disaster in Australia. Things won't be much better trying the same bad idea somewhere else.

      It only applies to trillionaire-owned social media platforms. Stay away from them, as you should, with or without this ID nonsense.

        @openrightsgroup @JamesBaker The solution is quite simple. There are very few social media. The majority is unlawful (data theft), harmful, vindictive, addictive, contains lies, are commercial and rotten to the core. Just stop using them.

              @TuutW @openrightsgroup When it applies to gaming platforms it’s not as simple for many people as just ditching X for Mastodon. Although the later would be a silver lining

                        @openrightsgroup And if it means I won't be online? Then I won't be online. It's worth it if it means I don't have to give my identity to some shady third party company, that doesn't know how to take care of that data

                        @fenex33 @openrightsgroup In theory at least until certain things demand being online like important government things which means having to submit your data. They'll find a way to snag it unless you want to become a non-person which isn't so bad as long as you don't mind the drifter life.

                                    I worry it will entrench their power and obscure meaningful policies that would tackle the root causes. For example how going through Reddit ID process meant Reddit then got you year of birth data to better target people with adds. Millions of people’s personal ID data will go into these systems and much will end up being used by ad tech and reinforce power structures

                                      But it seems we are both worried about the power of those platforms

                                        “Soon it will be virtually impossible to be online in the UK without handing over identity documents or biometric data to unregulated companies.”

                                        The social media ban means EVERY user has to prove they're over 16. This puts millions at risk of their personal data being hacked.

                                        @openrightsgroup @JamesBaker are they going to erect barriers to websites hosted outside the UK?

                                          @musevg @openrightsgroup @JamesBaker At least in England the Greens are your only option, there are other options in the other nations thankfully.

                                          That's a bet on a very unknown, isn't it?
                                          How many seats in the HoC are currently green?
                                          Also the next government(s) may need to form a coalition because one-party majorities may become rare?

                                          (Btw: German Greens turned out to be much less green than expected once they reached the government, so… maybe… curb your expectations)
