@ohmu It does not compute. It doesn’t. I’ve been following the market since the 1980s, and it has never made less sense.

    @MissConstrue
I can imagine a scenario where firms -particularly in hedge funds and other non-daylighted finance- have been super quietly refinancing staggering volumes of loaned money and quietly unloading bad stocks as write-offs and that this has been preventing the cascade failures in 2000 and 2008.

But that would require a level of care and forethought I've never in my life seen in that sector.

@ohmu @MissConstrue I think the differences here are that a. essentially the totality of global capital is now available to be tapped and b. the capitalist fantasy of production without labor seems possible, and there’s no amount capital won’t put towards that end.

That's a good explanation for Wil E Coyote's run out into the puff of dust.
What I'm wondering is how he still hasn't fallen.

I think they might have missed how people specifically hate "AI" as well, and how history provides quite a few examples of people manifesting their discontent upon an abusive or noxious factory.

@lispi314 We will see a neo Luddite movement any day. Plus, the Luddites had great songs.

Shadow banking drives a lot of it. That’s a whole thing I haven’t really dived into because even after getting elbows deep, I’m out of my depth…but there’s shenanigans afoot in the shadow banking market.

You know the whole #Coxon #Anthropic "We're all gonna die" thing? It's kinda looking like paid astroturfing. Marketing psyop to coincide with #Nvidia declaring that microchips are "long term investible assets". We are being played, y'all.

Jacob had almost zero footprint, wiped his X before the post, and had only been at Anthropic for a few months. Within a few minutes of the WSJ dropping the story, he does his announcement post on the twitters, and is instantly boosted by some of the biggest names in the AI field, which is not how organic engagement works for an account with no followers. His follower count goes up by hundreds of thousands, he gets media attention everywhere, and suddenly everyone is talking about LLM like it's a mind, and not a computer with an OFF switch.

At the same time, Nvidia hard launches the term "AI Factory" to rebrand datacenters and try and raise 500 billion dollars from your retirement fund.

I dunno gang, I think I'm calling shenanigans on this.

@MissConstrue but he specifically said "this is not a marketing stunt." Surely someone conducting a marketing stunt would never say that. 🤔

Considering that these microchips last from months to a few years at most, where's the "long-term"? It's a scam...

I remember pre-dotcom bubble that most sane folks thought there was a crash coming. They just didn't know when. IIRC the crash came almost a year later than I though it would happen.

Here we are at a moment that has been *screaming* imminent crash for almost two years.
But it keeps not happening. Is there something about everybody knowing a crash is coming that makes it so fintech bros can skirt an actual crash happening? The market just .. absorbs it somehow?

@ohmu @MissConstrue Crashes always happen years later than you'd think. The Great Housing Bubble was obvious as heck by 2004, maybe earlier, but didn't fizzle until 2006 and didn't pop until 2008. In addition, you can see with this "AI will kill us all" propaganda operation (see receipts in this thread) they've gotten really sophisticated at PR to prop things up.

Well crap. I rebalanced my DCP to greatly reduce exposure to stocks.
Is this keeps going for another four years, my holdings will get clobbered!
