I don't think that there is silence (see below for two topical articles in the Guardian and Sueddeutsche Zeitung) rather there is too much noise.

People are just not able to cope with the deluge of information. Important pieces such as this one are drowning in a sea of chatter.

@ColinTheMathmo a well written article. The leading graph though... It's a standard deviation, but of what? The article makes the point that it is from actual experimental measurements. Could the math not be amplifying or distorting the signal here?
