Interesting fact: in the Matrix-comic (which the movie is based on), the machines aren‘t harvesting the humans for power but for the processing capacity of their brains! So, they use the humans just like GPUs are used in a datacenter. -

Am I right in thinking that Japan’s energy usage figure also includes all of their data centres?
Also all the energy their massive ship building industry uses?
And the rest of the energy the world’s 5th largest economy (1 place ahead of Germany) uses?

Yes that does include all the electricity used in data centres, rail traffic, factories, shipyards, etc.
If I am not mistaken, Japan used 858.6TWh of electricity in 2024.

And data center electricity consumption is growing rapidly — it's expected to double by 2030 to about 945 terawatt-hours, around what Japan consumes annually, according to the International Energy Agency.

You know how rich people always say we can’t afford primary education or healthcare other nonsense. It’s more of a disease of America, but people should just look at the billionaires and tech and say, “Wait! We just can’t afford you guys. Sorry we can’t find the funds. We need to feed people.”
