    on @grist Matt Simon describes the path we need to encourage utilities to pursue. The #battery in a standard #EV is much larger than a wall-mounted battery typically installed with a residential solar system. Vehicle to grid (V2G) is a viable path for #greening the grid to reduce #greenhouse gas #emissions. #climate https://grist.org/transportation/how-evs-could-solve-a-problem-with-americas-rickety-grid/

      @co2mmit @grist

      First: 65 "necessay" cookies? Seriously?

      Second: I really like the idea of virtual power plants made up of a network of V2G vehicles and chargers, but it should probably be in the form of grid stabilization only.

      It's true that allowing people to cook with surplus energy from their car is tempting, but unless you have some serious extra range in your vehicle, quite a lot of EV owners probably end their day with not that much juice left in the battery.

      That said, slowly siphoning 2 kWh over the span of half an hour to support the grid will hardly put any load on anything, and if you have 2000 vehicles each supplying just a single kW to the grid, you suddenly have the equivalent of a 2MW generator. Placed locally. Next to the consumer.
