Openbsd does not have a formal policy however you can find a mailing list reply from theo de raadt saying his viee that they can't accept ai contributions due to copyright not being assignable. Openbsd uses llvm/clang in base which is fairly sloppy, idk what complier netbsd uses. Gentoo uses linux kernal so is giant pile of slop i think we must conclude.

@brettm @holsta @babe Yes indeed. But for things actively developed in OBSD base, I’d argue that’s slightly different as to get your application there in the first place implies a high bar of quality. I’m sure deraadt will follow it up in due course.

@thomasadam @holsta @babe The arguments raised by project leadership was rejection of genAI on legal and quality grounds. Quality aside (it is subjective and applies equally to handwritten contributions) this leaves the copyright legal questions which I think are a weak position against genAI. Because as soon as laws change in genAI's favour the argument stops being valid.

Honestly, if there was a voting system in the OpenBSD project (there isn't) I would expect a similar result to the one from Debian. While there are developers with strong green/left political positions, there are an equal, if not more, people who fall into the middle and conservative camps. I once tried to get Hitler quotes removed from fortune files and that showed a huge division on the subject. I had to ask everyone to stop the discussion and leave my private inbox alone and dropped the proposal.

I believe quality gating will keep openbsd fairly free of nonsense AI code. So by all means, use it and you can largely ignore the AI stuff. But don't go into the community expecting a completely left-wing/green aligned crowd. That is not a valid reason to stick around there.

Even though it ships with base i'm not sure if Theo considers it 'part of base.' Personally i would rather see those commits get carved out but i'm not sure they will. Possibly in the future ppl will have to write an OS from scratch in Zig to get slopfree

@babe No Linux distribution can coherently ban AI contributions when the Linux kernel itself has embraced them. If purity is the goal, at this point it kinda has to be a BSD, right?

@brettm @holsta @babe No, it is not developed in GitHub first. Commits go OpenBSD first, and then pulled into GH. Although some contributors chose to develop features in -portable first, it’s always via OpenBSD.

@mike @syhr @babe so far it is AI free as far as the distribution goes but I didn't see any official statement.

Plus, it has the same problem as all Linuxes or other central components AI yes or no (kernel being the most obvious example at the moment)

I would personally do my own distribution again if necessary so maybe more "meta Linux" and "meta BSDs" to build your own more easily and mix and match like LFS. I like the Chimera idea.

I will also insist on no nazi affiliations however.
