    there are a lot of "memory-holed" events in US history, but Covid's peak was only 6 years ago

    There were freezer trucks parked outside of hospitals to store corpses, because so many people were dying

    It was not some kind of irrational panic, and there is a wildly large contingent of people in the world that views it as such

      @healyn I still know people who derisively call it "the deadly COVID," and I'm like "Motherfucker it was deadly, here almost like nowhere else because of people like you."

        had to block someone who quote posted this one, saying that peak has yet to come (scrolled through their timeline, and they're just constantly promoting a podcast)

        @healyn that person explicitly listed she/her pronouns in her handle

        maybe it'd be nice if you do not misgender her even if you disagree with her

            @healyn

            I kept some measure of emotional balance by reading Mark Sumner's posts on DailyKos (now writing at Uncharted Blue) tracking nearly every aspect of the developing pandemic from case fatality rates in Italy in February to NYC transmission rates in March to info about masks, and on and on as we stocked up on canned goods and donated the latex gloves and handful of N95 masks we managed to find to the local hospital having no idea how bad it might get.

            Fauci is a damn hero if anything.

              @joeinwynnewood seems rational. You could have just listened to the wealthiest people in the world who thought it would work itself out within a couple months

                @Tattooed_Mummy @BustaMarx @healyn something particularly rage making about this moment in 2026 is how theres hardly any space available for reckoning with the impacts, which are of course ongoing, but that initial few years was massively traumatic in ways nobody is able to socially/culturally process

                  @healyn my job is tech project management. A lot of people had it much worse.

                  But a factor that does get forgotten is that medicine involves a huge amount of people. Pharmacists, admins, janitors, doctors, nurses, warehouse workers, IT staff, etc. A lot of us saw this directly.

                  @StevenSavage @healyn My sister worked a vax bus in Nashville. Had a magno lassi today and remembering her story of when the bus went to a local Indian community center, who kept them stocked with mango lassies and as much as they could eat all day. It truly was a weird time.

                          COVID wasn't allowed to be a unifying event because fascists see too much value in keeping us divided.

                            @bootlegrydia @healyn Perhaps the OP was trying not to provide any identifying information? There are multiple reasons to use generic pronouns when talking about someone, especially when the person's gender was irrelevant to the point the OP was making. (Grammatically, "they" does not and never has meant specifically "someone who uses they/them pronouns", but is rather the non-gender-specific pronoun set offered by standard English.)

                                @healyn

                                The same people are the ones who argued that the pandemic was nature's way of culling the weak - like it's bad to resist that.

                                Also, the same people undermined the basic science of masking and the vaccines.

                                There's a reason the leaders of these people are anti-science and want people to die. There should be greater discussion about that - and who funded them.
