They are also unlikely to ask if she needs and explantion, so that path is out as well.

This is a terrific chart that explains the issue. Maybe just simplify the chart and say 'yes' or everything else 'no'. Of course, most of these guys won't take no for an answer either. -

For conferences, print a compact version that fits inside the plastic pocket you get for your conference ID and put it in the back, so you can just flip the badge to show it.
