I just want to say, fuck you, Microsoft, for *yet again* destroying hours of work for something as trivial as an OS update -- without even telling me, much less asking my permission.

This is why everyone will end up running Linux in the end. I can't wait to get back to a place where I can afford to overwrite your malware with a real OS.

(And before anybody glibly advises me to save more often: The work I do often involves long-running *processes*, not just files that can be saved.)

Do we love clueless, unsolicited advice!

@hosford42 Years ago the software for out LAN servers ran on a modified verson of SCO Unix. These servers would run for years without a restart. The New VP in the IT area told us we had to transition them all to Windows NT servers. We then had a weekend reboot schedule for servers. Not only that but went from about 30 servers to over 100 because they couldn't handle the same load.

@hosford42 I'm very sorry. This may well be just as glib, but I believe https://github.com/Raphire/Win11Debloat allows the stopping of restarting for updates and there may be scripts which stop updates altogether.

Ugh!!!!
I've literally told my OS on that machine that I'm on a metered network so it will not download updates without my explicit ok. It saved me from the most recent fuckup so I recommend it.
As far as I can tell it doesn't mess with anything else. -

@techsinger No, that's a legitimate option I haven't seen or considered before, not just a roundabout way to tell me it's my fault. Thank you!

@RegGuy I cannot come up with a good reason to use Windows in a professional setting. It almost always comes down to politics and familiarity, not practicality.

@RegGuy "But they have support." (Which you will constantly need and won't be effective.)
