    @becomethewaifu

    You say:

    Elon seems to have made a habit of “asking for forgiveness rather than permission,” taking advantage of our regulators allowing “self-certification,” which they then try to poke holes in after the fact, rather than having the agency itself handle the certification from the outset.

    You were absolutely right, but as I said in my previous message, I can understand how he might get away with doing that once or twice. But the fact that he can keep doing it indefinitely is also a failure on the part of the authorities.

    Unfortunately, financial blackmail sometimes means that the authorities can’t do much...

    @jesuislibre @becomethewaifu I think it's important to understand that people like musk intentionally look for loopholes that are difficult for authorities to patch over, especially in ways that authorities have not foreseen.

    sometimes this shit is literally "company exploited a loophole specifically because it originates from a 1920s treaty that involves four different countries of which one doesn't exist anymore and so nobody even knows who to negotiate with to get it fixed"

    I'm absolutely not saying that authorities are perfect, or even that they've not been negligent here, because I do not have much love or respect for authorities in general and they fuck up all the time.

    but it's dangerous to automatically conclude "the authorities must have failed" *just* because it hasn't been fixed yet, because that's *exactly* the kind of rhetoric that people like musk weaponize to justify their "ignore consequences and just do a thing" approach, framing themselves as a hero fighting the unjust authorities while actually enriching themselves

      @adamshostack @violetblue I'm looking forward to seeing footage of first responders beating the shit out of these to access people trapped inside. Firefighters especially don't give a solitary fuck about a car that needs moved or broken open.

      @beecycling @adamshostack @violetblue That might be more difficult if there's high voltage somewhere unspecified in the car.

        Tesla put its breathtakingly ugly Cybercab on Austin streets Thursday: it has no steering wheel, no pedals, and no door handles. Tesla published an emergency guide on its website telling first responders the robotaxi can be pushed to clear a lane, but warns that pushing it over 5mph risks overheating the motor and electric shock. The car must be “caged” before interacting with it. And, “not every high voltage component is labeled.” The guide also says first responders should contact the company “via the car’s communications system or phone… If Tesla cannot be reached by phone, the manual advises first responders to use an email address to learn more about how to move the Tesla and warns, ‘This email is not monitored for emergency requests.’” [NBC News]

        @adamshostack @violetblue Wow, this seems unbelievably asinine. I was going to comment, "what dipshit municipality approved these vehicles as street legal", but then I saw Texas. So dumb.

                                  @adamshostack @violetblue Cue Musk having a fash meltdown because his electric chair on wheels is banned in the rest of the world (but especially the EU).

                                      Any clue on how a passenger could get out of it if this happens?

                                      It sounds like the lack of door handles is only on the outside. There are handles on the inside, and they can even operate a mechanical latch without needing to find a separate override in an emergency. The doors are apparently heavy enough that Tesla warns they won't stay open without someone holding them up. I bet the Jaws of Life will work, though.

                                        Hopefully not in the doors though?

                                          @wonka @beecycling @adamshostack @violetblue With potential high voltage going through some unspecified areas? Makes it a bit more tricky.
