A thing it took me a while to understand when I first joined Mastodon is what federation actually means for us users.
There are Fediverse equivalents to a bunch of things. @peertube is like youtube. @PixelFed is like instagram. @loops is like tiktok.
But you can use your Mastodon account to interact with these. It would be like if you could follow, like and comment on a youtube video direct from your facebook account. No additional sign up.

@fluffgar thanks for helping us newbies out! I get all that in theory but how do I start finding users and content from other specific platforms?

@sophia If, say, you're looking for some PeerTube videos on a subject you like. I find it easiest to search for that outside of Mastodon first. Once found, I search for that username here and follow it. The will look like any you'd find here @[name] followed by @[instance].
Sometimes their posts/videos won't show up at first. Maybe the servers need time to talk to each other.
@FediTips can probably provide more assistance.
Do you have a specific interest in mind to start with?

Content from other platforms will show up in your search results in Mastodon alongside the Mastodon content.
The Fediverse is one social network with many kinds of platform within it, they all use a compatible technical standard that lets their content be viewed and interacted with across platforms.
You may not even realise you are following ot interacting with people from other platforms, as it happens so seamlessly. More info at https://fedi.tips/what-is-mastodon-what-is-the-fediverse/
