    (not about anything specific to me right now, just a general sentiment I keep seeing recently)

    Recently I saw someone talking about how their moderately popular podcast was going to launch a patreon so they didn't have to rely on sponsors and someone literally responded "I love your podcast and have even purchased from your sponsors, but this is too far and I would never support a patreon" like... What?! - I get it, it isn't for everyone, but like, did you need to say that?!

      saw an internet poet the other day get told by someone who said they liked their poetry that they shouldn't hope to get paid for it (summarized/simplified) - like how do you enjoy something someone has made and then just tell them straight up you want it for free and to never think of them needing money?!

        If you can support creators and artists you like, small or big, please do! It really means the world!

        And honestly no shame if you can't/can't directly support everyone you enjoy - but like maybe don't tell them that they shouldn't get money for what you enjoy?

            They believe in the myth of the Starving Artist.

            But Starving Artists do not make Great Art.

            They starve. It's right there in the name.

              @Trenton_Hoshiko

              I found that most people don't really like creativity.

              Of course, they like allegedly creative celebrities and are happy to buy into the narrative of the creative and successful entrepreneur… but when it comes to people they know personally (and most likely of their own social standing), that enthusiasm quickly turns to indifference and dismissiveness.

              If these creative types manage to make a buck or two from their art, that must be like a red rag to a bull for these people.

                    @Trenton_Hoshiko This is so sad. It seems that today many people don't want to pay for services/products if they somehow can get it free. What it comes to their own work, they value it quite high.

                      @Trenton_Hoshiko I think there’s also so much content out there for free that people just don’t value it the same! I feel like social media has incentivised creatives, creators to post work for free (to stand out) or take on brand sponsors as a way to make an income but I don’t think many people understand what they give up in return when they’re consuming for free! Much better to pay your favourite creator and support them directly so they can keep creating freely!

                        @snemish @Trenton_Hoshiko No such thing as "creating freely" when the result is behind a paywall. That's the opposite of free.

                          @ariarhythmic I mean “creating freely” more from a creators perspective, if people are paying or supporting your work on a platform like Patreon they are paying you for your artistic style/ content. On a platform that is free like youtube or instagram you are often forced to jump on trends or post for the sake of posting to keep feeding the algorithms. This is my personal experience as a creative person but I’m sure there are different experiences out there.

                            @davidtheeviloverlord @Trenton_Hoshiko See also the horrendous myth of the tortured artist. I was entirely 0% able to be creative during times of poverty and depression and am now able to be creative because I am lucky enough to have found stability. #creativity

                              I’m in Europe, and it’s the same over here. So many people with a regular income and a fairly new car and no inclination to share. They’ll rather buy a new smartphone than support musicians or writers or other artists.

                              Sometimes I think they’re jealous and believe being able to enjoy one’s own creativity is rewarding enough. But we’ve got to pay taxes and the rent, too. We can’t take a loaf of bread and say “baking is such a wonderful thing to do, your life must be so fulfilling “. Guess what, we’ll have to pay for that loaf just like anyone else.
