"Why is the #Nextcloud desktop client so big?!
" Let me explain in my blog post!
@i2h3 Can you elaborate on this: It’s a technical necessity for a very specific reason: signing in with Nextcloud’s global scale feature.

@i2h3 okay, so now it‘s broken down to ”to authenticate, we need half a gigabyte“

<scnr>@goetz Well… Qt does which is the foundation of this project since its inception.
In a native macOS app which uses WKWebView (shipped with macOS) it basically adds no notable overhead. Been there, done that. Integrating that into a Qt app on the other hand is overly complicated and fragile. I did a bit of research into that direction. Actually, QtWebView does that at expense of API features (which we need) due to the platform portability requirement.

@i2h3 Thx not only for the „fix“ but also for the detailed explanation, surprisingly interesting read (for me as a non-coding person)

@skittles You are welcome! I was a bit insecure about it being detailed enough, actually.

@i2h3 For me as an engineer from a completely different field it’s just the right amount to be interesting to read, I don’t know if it’s enough information for an expert.
Although I would think those would probably check the github repository and discuss it with their peers there anyway.

@i2h3 thats a great evolution. I just hope it was done by humans, but apart from that code size reduction is always good.

@i2h3 Thank you so much, the qt web engine dependency was driving me crazy!
