Following hashtags is one of the neatest things here.
I follow #Monsterdon and participate in #BikeNite
And if you like a hashtag you can mute it.
Another neat feature is you can follow someone, but also NOT follow their boosts (I boost way too much).

@cainmark @njbair @pluralistic I have list called Boosty, add boosty people and mark it so it doesn't show up in my main timeline. So when I'm in the mood for boosty its there.

@oheso @njbair @pluralistic Actually just edit your post and add the hashtag. Mastodon has traditionally been hashtag heavy.
