    "Gigafactory" is a term coined and popularized by known fascist and racist Elon Musk. "AI Factory" was coined by NVIDIA to make investments into their graphics cards look like a reasonable way to use one's resources.

    That alone should stop anyone from using those terms or their composita. The fact that "AI" hasn't shown meaningful contribution to economic growth or increased productivity is another mark against it.

    But "AI" does what it was built to do: Disenfranchise Labor, push down wages, increase power and economic inequality. Those "Factories" produce injustice. No democracy should want anything to do with it.

      @tante I don't want Europe to become an AI continent.

        @tante they'd better insure their investments ... in the US such building sites are already a fav spot for plunder and theft of cables, building parts etc.

          @tante Am I alone in also feeling a profound sadness over all of this?

          Yes, I'm angry over wasteful spending. Worried about the environmental impact. Scared for the loss of our humanity. Infuriated to be told my words are AI (they never are). Exhausted of the constant copying of the US despite...

          But mostly - I am genuinely just really sad.

            @tante Canada is all-in on this, too. I'm all for getting off of our US tech infra reliance. But why throw that time and effort into a sinkhole, while still throwing money at a US company.

              @tante What these factories will produce are weapons.

              You should think of #AI as dual-use technology. It has some civilian uses, but the tip of the spear is in #military and surveillance.

              #Weapons don't have to be elegant. They don't need to hit every time, as long as you have a lot of them. That's what modern ML does best.

              AI tools will accelerate development of weapons. Especially #autonomousweapons. These data centers will undoubtedly become the nerve centers of a global world tyranny.

                  @gimulnautti @tante
                  Because landmines and cluster bombs didn't choose their victims with enough randomness.

                    @tante When it comes to words (like Gigafactory) I found it interesting to see that in some German and some Belgium news outlets and columns the abbreviation K.I. is still used for Artificial Intelligence.

                    However in the Netherlands the hype of A.I. has taken over, everywhere the word used is A.I. despite the fact that "Kunstmatige Intelligentie" (Dutch for Artificial Intelligence) is an expression which has been in use for decades already. My take would be that people can choose to go for KI if they like to talk about Artificial Intelligence rather than the LLM big tech hype which lives under the AI abbreviation. Besides that there's really no need for non-USA and non-UK countries to be lazy and sloppy and deny your own language words.

                    #decolonize #boycott #bigtech #USA
