Is there any fediverse software to create groups that are findable for anyone, but can only be read by members?

Is there any fediverse software to create groups that are findable for anyone, but can only be read by members? I have a bunch of use cases where I'd like to try and offer an alternative to FB groups, which has become the staple go to solution here in Sweden even among people who intuitively dislike FB. #fediverse

@leanderlindahl I would also love to see the same. Facebook is the default here in Canada particularly in smaller communities. FB Groups are the norm for communication.

@chris yes, it would have been sweet to have a fediverse/mastodon groups software alternative. With smaller communities that you mentioned, it's almost mandatory with fb groups. And I don't use FB, so I'm locked out.

@leanderlindahl me neither. or at least morally. The other thing that FB has monopolized in my region is private buy/sell listings. Everyone uses Marketplace. I have an FB account solely for that purpose. Is that similar in Sweden?
Unfortunately, I think an entirely new kind of platform would have to be designed/created for a federated mastodon-compatible version to exist. Maybe @dansup's next project. ;=)

@chris @leanderlindahl I hope someone hops into this thread with a magic solution. I am another one in this position - locked out of clubs or groups like the residents' association that communicate all but the most official formal things through a Facebook group. And even the official things are also shared on Facebook weeks or even months before formal notices are sent to members by mail. Most frustrating.

The kind of group tool we're wishing for is a little different - it's a group that's private to allow sharing members-only information, a group that only named individual members can see. Like members of a resident's association or a sports team or similar. @chris @leanderlindahl

@CiaraNi @chris @leanderlindahl as per @FediTips private group is also possible, but that is not end to end encrypted https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/

Nothing is end-to-end encrypted on any social media platform. If you need to send sensitive data you should use secure messenger apps.
There are no tools in Mastodon to allow an admin to see people's private messages. However, in theory an admin might be able to find private messages by looking at the raw database of the server (but it would require technical knowledge).
