also YAY!, I found out how to construct the most basic synth with VCV Rack (thanks @mosgaard 
) - after about a dozen "beginner" tutorials I found one that starts where I was, i.e. able to get a single, continuous tone out of a VCO & nothing else. This is doing exactly what I want, which is starting to make sense - I think it's OK to describe it in the alt text, since it's all visual
