@prism
I'm not going to defend Microsoft, this is on you.If those files are really important for you, why didn't you have a backup?
And Microsoft doesn't just delete files from the cloud. You either have to delete your account or delete them yourself. Logging off OneDrive doesn't do that either.
@allezhub @prism “I’m not going to defend Microsoft” says the total asshole who then proceeds to defend Microsoft with inaccurate information.

Windows 11 sets the default documents folder to onedrive\documents. Anything that gets saved there gets backed up to one drive. This includes various save games, all my Reaper stuff, and various other odds and ends that I like to, you know, save.
To save disc space, OneDrive also defaults to files being online-only. They're not stored on your device, they're just listed there. So despite what they call it, this is in fact not a backup at all, because it doesn't create an extra copy. It is actually just transferring your most precious, irreplacible, personal files to Microsoft in the background, and trusting that nothing will happen. You can see where this is going, but just to underline the point with a bleeding fucking dagger, I did not ask for any of this, I just clicked save like I have done for the last twenty or so years of my life using Windows.
Since I don't care about and have never intentionally used onedrive, I signed out of it. Flash forward six months, the files that I thought were on my computer (because I can go see them there in the folder) are in fact gone from my hard drive, and also Onedrive nuked them from orbit.
Years of my life, gone without a trace. Thanks so much, Microsoft. Whoever came up with all those ideas probably got massive performance bonuses, because we're in the worst timeline.
Goodnight.
@prism And some people still do not understand why I migrated my operation entirely to Linux a couple of decades ago. Never trust Microsoft.
-
@prism but obviously MS back's up their stuff they would never lose data and just tell a customer "to bad, so sad" you should have backed it up......
https://www.theregister.com/saas/2026/09/28/microsoft-tells-nonprofits-their-deleted-m365-data-isnt-coming-back/5299433@bosconet I was backing it up. To one drive. The worst thing that should have happened is they deleted the backup. They removed the files from my computer without my knowledge or consent.

@wpeckham I don't have that option. Accessibility on linux is a trash fire.

The top take from chuds (who have presumably done nothing wrong their whole lives) is "if those files were so important, you should have backed them up."
I was backing them up. To OneDrive.
Learn to read you fucking neanderthals.

@mathew @prism
I'm wrong. You're right. Happy?BTW:
I don't use any Microsoft product or service. I'm full in on Apple. All my files are in iCloud, which also saves most of them only in the cloud. Never lost any file. Why? Backups (eg. BackBlaze and external drive).And now, I wish you both a nice day.

@Ribby This has blackpilled me to such a huge extent. I no longer trust that anything on my computer will be there tomorrow, or the next day. I am now a paranoid crank boarding up the virtual doors and windows raving about electronic chemtrails. It's so bad dude.

@simonzerafa OMG that's horrible! They're literally holding your data hostage for the sake of a $5/mo cloud subscription. Absolute fucking demons.

@adredish @prism You have to be careful with backups when OneDrive is involved – SyncToy should work, as would a naïve backup script, but actual backup programs likely won't help:
That's one nice thing about an external HD. You should be able to see that the files actually got copied over. When in doubt you can even check ot on another computer.

@prism My conspiracy theory is Microsoft actually hates its users. Ive been trying to figure out how to switch to Linuxever since windows announced they were harvesting data from people. It's slow going since I'm not a computer person and I've slowed down because *the drama*. Thanks for reminding me this is priority number Fuckin 1

@adredish @jernej__s Not to mention, when I copy a file to a hard drive, IT FUCKING STAYS THERE.

@Ribby Never confuse malace for stupidity etc. I unfortunately am hostage to the whims of this demonic corporation, because accessibility on linux has been a slow motion train wreck from the jump.

@prism certainly sufficiently advanced stupid is indistinguishable from malace? Anyway. I'm sorry Microslop is awful

@prism If they WERE on your computer and deleted by OneDrive you might be able to get them back with something like DiskDrill especially if everything else you have done since has ended up on OneDrive and not on the computer to over-write things. Of course, the later things that never wrote to the computer could not be rescued this way, but the earlier stuff could

@adredish @prism Yes, but most people want something they can set and forget, and there are backup programs that work well (and will scream at you if there'a s problem creating the backup), and forced OneDrivification of Documents folder breaks them silently (other cloud storage services can do the same thing, but you have to enable that yourself, and the OS won't try to trick you into enabling them by putting up security alerts like it does with OneDrive).
Having a script and a hard drive's fine, but most people won't want to bother with that – I know I certainly wouldn't remember to run my backup script if it wasn't automated. -

@YstradgynlaisYstalyferaHistory The stuff that's missing is all old and I have been actively using the drive since then, I can't imagine it still exists there at this point. This is stuff from years and years ago so it would have been overwritten by now.

@prism damn. I never used OneDrive because of its UI. It never jelled with me like Dropbox did. I started deleting OneDrive once it started showing up. I'm truly sorry that you lost your data.
