I don't know. Maybe I've gotten jaded in my middle age. Maybe I've gotten disillusioned in general. Maybe seeing cryptocurrency, web3, and NFTs hit in rapid succession broke something in my techno-optimist personality.
But also, this is just that fucking bad. I've come around to Luddism as a principled and reasoned stance, even when I'm the kind of insufferable nerd who goes to sleep reading RFCs and wondering when I'll get to play with this or that new thing.
@xgranade I like to think of it less as something broken, and more of a lesson learned. Cryptocurrency and LLMs disgust me not because of the technology itself (I think it’s actually pretty interesting), but because I have my eyes open to the context surrounding it. I understand now what power looks like and who it affects. If I’m grumpier in my middle age, that’s why.

I downloaded alpha-quality NVIDIA drivers to try and play with style transfer toys and Deep Dream. Let me say that again: I willingly and *on purpose* ran *alpha-quality* *NVIDIA drivers* so I could play with something that is an immediate precursor to modern genAI products.
I am the ideal target audience for AI products.
And yet, based on knowing even a little bit about what they are, I fucking *loathe* them.

I downloaded alpha-quality NVIDIA drivers to try and play with style transfer toys and Deep Dream. Let me say that again: I willingly and *on purpose* ran *alpha-quality* *NVIDIA drivers* so I could play with something that is an immediate precursor to modern genAI products.
I am the ideal target audience for AI products.
And yet, based on knowing even a little bit about what they are, I fucking *loathe* them.
@xgranade Sometimes I think about how a younger me would've been insufferable all-in on GenAI.

@xgranade@wandering.shop I feel that. Like, when the AI craze started, I wanted northing to do with it from the get go. Only recently I did more digging and some experimentation because I felt I had to better understand what I was criticising. I'm by far an expert but I have yet to find a single model that was solely trained on data that the creators had permission to use (an opt-out is not permission). Hell, models like those we have today could probably not even exist if we made that a requirement (please tell me if you do know a model like that, though). And then there's the energy-requirements, bad quality in slop code and other AI "works", biases in the models, models being used to actively promote fascism, yada yada yada...
I mean, while overhyped, the technology is somewhat interesting. But is it worth it? No, I don't think so. -

@xgranade it's funny you bring up Deep Dream, because I keep rhetorically returning to it as an application of machine learning with artistic merit. I think it has to do with the way that its output appeals to our imaginations and curiosity, instead of the way current genai companies try to optimize those away.

@esbe Yes, very much so. It was both art in its own right *and* an early warning sign about how genAI vendors saw art as something to commoditize, enclose, and extrude.
