@xinit the app is just a wrapper for a web browser looking at the same bad website, but now you can't use extensions to block ads and tracking cookies

@jim_easterbrook And your Facebook page is not a website. Have an actual website.

@jim_easterbrook but you missed the point. when it says, use our app for a better experience, it doesn't mean a better experience for you

@jim_easterbrook sadly because Apple.have decided that, unlike Android, we're not allowed to read (or write) NFC from the browser I am faced with having to build an app. As the sole dev for a volunteer run organization I am grumpy about it (time, effort, and a developer fee I don't need)

Many times, yes. Especially with news sites. The ones that bother me are banking and investment apps where you can only perform certain actions via the app or the website.

@jim_easterbrook That app? Just an embedded version of their website.

@Tattooed_Mummy @jim_easterbrook It may. There are specific things you're just not allowed to do from a browser. These are for safety reasons because it's just insane to allow any generic script that kind of access. So to get that access they need specific permission to run on your device and yeah, it's maybe nothing more really than their website with more access to your device and this can be great or a major mistake on your part.

@jim_easterbrook@mstdn.social I honestly hate services that only have a bad app and no working web alternative, even when the type of service would work perfectly fine without an app at all. #PWA #TWA #website #webapp
