@alisynthesis as someone alluded to in the comments, nintendo switched from mask roms to flash in their carts during the 3ds era, i believe? and now it’s very possible to buy used carts that have died in this way 🙃

I fucking knew it. My first question when they were first introduced was how many overwrites before they wear out? But this is even worse.

I never felt comfortable storing anything on an SSD, so only Debian + software is installed on a 500GB SSD, and all of my backup drives are 4TB server-grade HDDs, and they only have a lifespan of 20-ish years, even if you're careful.

@archesofscratch73 yeah, I have always used HDDs for my long-term storage too, but more because they're cheaper than any other reason. I think it's seriously fucked for someone to sell a hard drive that just loses data after a year of sitting without telling you that.

@alisynthesis The lifetime of each flash block in an SSD is limited by a maximum number of times that it can be erased/written. Internally, a powered-on SSD is constantly doing wear-leveling. Best to keep them powered on for data integrity.

@brhfl I had no idea they used a form of NAND! It must be cheaper to produce and provision each game cartridge.

@_slotek_ I imagine they are powered on when a computer using them for the OS is in a sleep state. Is that correct?

@alisynthesis I think so, but I'd have to look it up for any device with a missing/obscured power LED.

For sure, but it also seems pretty much par for the course. Tech companies don't exactly have a sterling reputation for honesty...
