I'm still confused on how Mastodon works. I liked a bunch of posts from someone I follow, then I clicked a link on their profile and it went to another Mastodon site or server or whatever they're called and all the posts I liked did not have likes on them.

Each server is independent, but they talk to each other so that you can interact with people. You and I are on different servers but we're having this conversation right now
I'm not sure which link you clicked on their profile, but I'm guessing it was to their own server's website?
Each server has its own website, but you interact with people from within your own server's website. It's a bit like email, you don't have to visit Yahoo's site to email someone with a Yahoo address.

There's a lot more info about how to use this place and how it works on the website at https://fedi.tips (especially the "Quick Start" section at the top and the "What is Mastodon?" guide at https://fedi.tips/what-is-mastodon-what-is-the-fediverse/).
