@douglasvb @dlakelan don't let capitalism fool you! The web is great, but they stole it from
us!@iakobsdesamos @douglasvb @dlakelan
One of my big problems with Discord is that people treat it like it's a "safe" replacement for the Web that was stolen from us, when no, Discord is "theirs" to begin with. -

@dlakelan In hindsight, we did fall for the assumption that large centralized architectures built by benevolent dictators would work because we seemed to believe that technical competency and benevolence were hand in hand, and not a particular artifact of a particular, I'm not sure yet... Generation? Generation and geography? Dirty hippie technophiles in Silicon Valley? All of the above? None of the above? Wishful thinking?
Whatever it was, we failed to learn the lesson that history teaches about ceding territory to kings.

@dlakelan There isn't a "big mood" style of expression big enough to express the size of the mood I'm currently experiencing from your toot.
This was all a mistake. We should go back to disconnected BBSes. Or maybe ditch all the digital stuff and return to encyclopedias.
@douglasvb @dlakelan Heck, even BBS's had FidoNet for sharing packets of updates. And there was listserv. People like to network.

@dlakelan in fairness, some of us were just hanging around when it was being built and have regretted not having A Quiet Word
with the people doing it ever since -

@douglasvb @dlakelan Me in the 90's/00's: "Encyclopedias are beholden to the biases of traditional publishing companies and professional editorial boards and therefore inherently flawed. In this comment on a wikipedia article talk page, I will..."
Me now: "No time to talk, I'm too busy hoarding encyclopedia sets from the thrift store as a record of the times before the LLM infopocalypse!"
