But I'd have many nickels if I got one every time people came up with an excuse not to worry about the AfD, it's only 20%, 25%, 32%, 40%, and the German democratic system will protect us from them ever
taking hold, because nobody will go in a coalition with them, and so on. (And the same for Austria's FPÖ and the Dutch PVV.)The former West Germany is a CDU stronghold. But at the same time Merz has been steadfast at destroying the party's standing. Not a good outlook...

@phl @randahl i absolutely do not wanna downplay this shitshow. They most likely will be in power. That means they control the insituitons and can bring havoc not only in their area but in whole germany, can replaces judges, order home searches across all(!) germany, dissolve the foundation of public media and and and. This is absolutely not a thing to take light.
I would be happy if the democratic parties which are in power would have this threat taken more seriously, its a disgrace. Even after the biggest protests germany has seen in 40 years two years ago demanded some action. -

@randahl CDU always said in the past years, they wanted to cut the AfD in half—they almost succeeded, they just have some trouble with the aiming and their feet are always in the way

I guess this should be a warning to politicians everywhere: Don't let your citizens fall into unemployment and relative poverty, or they will become very easy prey for any populist party that promises to solve all their problems by harming someone else.
Desperate people, who has lost faith in a government that seems to have stopped caring about them, will do desperate things. That is true in Germany as well as the USA.
