YouTube is now using AI to alter people's videos without permission.

Exactly.
That's why having a copy of your videos on PeerTube is so important, it means any alterations on YouTube instantly become obvious by comparing the two versions.
It also means your viewers who want to avoid YouTube/Google completely are being given the option of watching on PeerTube.
@FediTips Oh wait, you meant to tell YouTubers they should post on PeerTube as a means of collecting EVIDENCE for when YouTube has defaced your work? Interesting.
IMHO YouTube just needs to DIE. A platform that so blatantly HATES the own creators does not deserve anyone's time. PeerTube FTW!
(I'm not a YouTuber btw, the few videos I did post are all on a PeerTube instance anyway lol.)

If a video creator wants to make sure people can always see the original versions of their video, it's important to have versions uploaded somewhere that Google/YouTube cannot touch them. PeerTube seems to be the best option, especially if it's your own server, as it's outside corporate control.
-
@FediTips and having content created for YouTube on PeerTube is a nice positive externality. One thing Youtubers need to understand is that the copying/import facility that PeerTube provides isn't a solution, there should be a specific upload to PeerTube and not a simple backup from YouTube (the later risks having the Big Tech altered video on PeerTube).
@Wuzzy@jt_rebelo @FediTips Wait. I don't think I understand your post. When you import a video from YouTube in PeerTube, that's NOT a full copy but basically just a mirror? Meaning that changes to the video will change the video in PeerTube?
If so, that should be made SUPER clear in the UI because that sounds like a trap. It should be clearly visible to the creator when a video was added not as a full independent copy but is pulled from another site. This distinction is important IMO.

As far as I know it's not a mirror, it's just YT-DLP downloading a copy. If the original changes, it isn't reflected on PeerTube.
However, the advantage of a direct upload is it never even passes through Google's systems. Usually this just means higher image quality, but if Google is going to alter uploads with AI then it would avoid that too.

YouTube is now using AI to alter people's videos without permission. (There are threads about this at https://mastodon.content.town/@operationpuppet/115640694705318541 & https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/@strypey/115598837629003478 etc)
This is really disturbing and dangerous. It's more insidious than censorship because viewers cannot tell a video has been altered.
If you post to YouTube, I'd strongly recommend you start ALSO posting to PeerTube, either on your own server or a public server. There's a complete guide here:
️ https://fedi.tips/how-to-publish-videos-and-audio-on-peertube@FediTips I tried to find a server on peertube that would allow me to upload my videos, but none of them allow an unlimited upload. The biggest server I found would let me upload a maximum of 25 videos in 4K quality and that's it. Can you please advice me on how to make your suggested back-up without having to manage my own server.

Fediverse servers are run by volunteers who do not run ads and do not sell people's data. They have to pay for the data storage costs themselves, out of their own pocket.
In those circumstances it's impossible for anyone to promise unlimited uploads.
You can avoid limits by paying for the storage yourself, by setting up your own server. This is also covered in the same guide: https://fedi.tips/how-to-publish-videos-and-audio-on-peertube/

@FediTips I mean, if the video is already on Youtube there might be no way (unless it happens right after the original is uploaded) to know (without watching the video copied
to PeerTube) that it was altered (I'm not talking about new uploads, or at least not videos that haven't been for a while on Youtube - doing what they want to do with the videos has to take some time, even if it is fast).
And knowing Big Tech, we all know that sooner rather than later they'll do their alterations while the video is being processed (after the upload) and before being posted (might not fool everyone, but they only need a small part, like they did with ads on videos uploaded by accounts that had no way to receive ad revenue - they did it to my "channel" years ago).

@FediTips
also is there an easy way of downloading all the content you put on youtube?Yes, you can copy your YouTube videos over to PeerTube, there's a video about it at https://video.fedihost.co/w/tEkBeu2ST3XgTnjq4wXtx6
(By the way, I have no connection to FediHost, they just have a similar name

This is crazy shit that must be stopped. But how? -
@FediTips
This is crazy shit that must be stopped. But how?It's a big task as YouTube has been around for 20 years now, but we can make a start by using other platforms that cannot be bought out by Google.
YouTube was originally independent, but because it was centralised it was very easy for Google to purchase it.
PeerTube is not centralised, it's spread out on many different servers and anyone can start their own pretty easily. It would be much more difficult for anyone to buy PeerTube out.

Copying from YouTube to PeerTube seems risky to the point of dumb. Even if the video seems to be unaltered on YouTube, can one be sure there aren’t invisible changes? -

Copying from YouTube to PeerTube seems risky to the point of dumb. Even if the video seems to be unaltered on YouTube, can one be sure there aren’t invisible changes?If you are willing to upload directly, that's the best option by far: you have total control over it and it's the highest possible technical quality.
However, some people who are new to the Fediverse and/or on the fence about PeerTube may find it easier to try it if there is a way of just automatically copying stuff over without having to do each video manually. Some of them may have hundreds of videos in their archive.

@FediTips @Wuzzy @jt_rebelo *IF* you can even successfully mirror it. I've been trying on a test instance and I can't get anywhere.
What does a channel do that's been around for years and has hundreds of videos? That will get expensive very quickly.

You can ask @paige as his instance hosts the PeerTube for many large channels such as @shifter and @ohtheurbanity and @reece
