there are a lot of "memory-holed" events in US history, but Covid's peak was only 6 years ago

There were freezer trucks parked outside of hospitals to store corpses, because so many people were dying

It was not some kind of irrational panic, and there is a wildly large contingent of people in the world that views it as such

had to block someone who quote posted this one, saying that peak has yet to come (scrolled through their timeline, and they're just constantly promoting a podcast)

@healyn This is just like "Y2K was overblown. Nothing even happened you fucking nerds" when it's actually like those fucking nerds saved the modern world from exploding

@healyn our family doctor of many many years died of it in the first few months. I wonder how the deniers managed to not know anyone either first or second hand

@healyn I don't want to hear a *peep* from any of these fuckers come September 11th.

(Mostly because I'll be at a furry convention at the time but. Y'know. That many Americans were dying *daily* in 2020.)

@healyn those of us who were listening to the NYC scanners in March and April of that year won't forget

And it wasn't what was said, it was the whole atmosphere and tone of what was being said.

@healyn Covid is an ongoing concern. Although there are fewer deaths from the acute infection happening, the virus has continued to spread year-round at high levels and there's an estimated 400-million people worldwide dealing with some form of Long Covid.

The US is heading into its 13th wave of Covid. It hardly matters what the root cause was for initial outbreak when practically everyone shoulders blame for perpetuating its spread now.

Families often found out AFTER the fact, their loved one was whisked out to Hart Island without so much as a phone call, text message or forewarning, 'cuz it was an Emergency and we were under attack and extreme measures had to be taken,... yeah it was bad.

@healyn I think many people convinced themselves that it had to have been an irrational panic because they found the idea that the problem was so bad that the response was rational to be utterly terrifying. Fear does strange things to the mind

@jalefkowit @healyn not to mention that if we just kinda shrugged and went back to normal while letting it continue to spread, it must not be that bad because otherwise it means the powers that be decided continued death was a small price to pay to get the economy (in the "rich people's yacht money" sense) back on track

@funkula @jalefkowit well that's the other thing people forget. The S&P dropped like 30% within 8 weeks before the Trump administration realized they had to do something

@funkula @jalefkowit all that government money was a reaction to a market crash that would have continued

(imo, good reaction from an administration that still had adults in the room)
