"Unsustainable" means private companies do not get a slice of the money as profit.

@HI_Greens to be fair the demands we make on the government for pensioner income (they aren't actually doing all that well, particularity the poorest) and for NHS care are increasing as the population ages and becomes increasing badly fed and unfit.
However we can afford to fund this if we chose to.
Strictly (according to MMT) we don't need to increases taxes but it would be perhaps it would be easier to justify if we were to tax those best able to afford it more (the rich, particularly the tax-avoiding ultra-rich and multinationals such as Amazon) and to remove the profiteering private sector out of our national services - NHS, Care, Water, Railways, Energy. -

@HI_Greens These things are "sustainable" if society as a whole wants them to be sustained.
Public services are NOT the same as profit-making businesses. The "profit" of a public service is the "service", not money.

@HI_Greens THe US is told it can't afford healthcare and so it allows a vulture industry to provide it at unsustainable cost. #FightBack

@gary_alderson @HI_Greens Wikipedia lists about 10 Jack Andersons, if you mean the one who was a columnist he wrote thousands of pieces over a long career so could you be more specific? As for claiming the private sector is more accountable, how and to whom?

@pthane @HI_Greens fedex is doing fine
@gary_alderson @HI_Greens Lots of companies are doing fine by their own metrics, ie profitability, ROI, share price. That's nothing to do with the original post about public services.

@pthane @HI_Greens they do the same thing as the usps, it is an apt comparison. less govt is good - we know govt is not accountable, the private sector has competition, they have contrrols, the govt doesn't, it isn't even close when you look at the efficiency of the private sector vs the govt

@gary_alderson @HI_Greens I think you're confusing the US with the rest of the world. The original post was about the UK Post Office, and other privatised public services. Some of our old publicly owned enterprises were badly managed and under invested. If we had cared enough we could have elected politicians who promised more money and better management but instead we kept electing politicians who promised low taxes and cut services they wouldn't fund.

@HI_Greens arguably the whole point of society is standing up good things despite them being otherwise "unsustainable".

@HI_Greens They are not businesses and were not designed to be profitable or self-sustaining.
