    @gary_alderson @HI_Greens I think you're confusing the US with the rest of the world. The original post was about the UK Post Office, and other privatised public services. Some of our old publicly owned enterprises were badly managed and under invested. If we had cared enough we could have elected politicians who promised more money and better management but instead we kept electing politicians who promised low taxes and cut services they wouldn't fund.

      @HI_Greens arguably the whole point of society is standing up good things despite them being otherwise "unsustainable".

          @HI_Greens They are not businesses and were not designed to be profitable or self-sustaining.

            @HI_Greens Hear hear! It's malign foreign influence and their agents trying to divide and conquer. How lucky are we to be Europeans! Look at all these so-called 'superpowers' that "can't afford" basic healthcare. Our very existence shames them. imho you may as well give up as a society if you cannot do the very minimum of housing, feeding, healing and educating your citizens. If there are people starving in your country by design you are in a failed state. We can obviously do better too. Still.

              @HI_Greens Yeah, but also while there was a larger, younger population sustaining it (including the rich chipping in).

                @gary_alderson @pthane @HI_Greens It sounds like your thinking is based on ideology rather than evidence.

                Privatisation was trialled in the 80's and 90's, and a lot of the damage it's done is still playing out, yet every time people still crawl out of the woodwork saying the government sucks without evidence. Where on Earth does the private sector provide better services?

                  @HI_Greens

                  Whoever tells us we can't afford the things we want is a liar, plain and simple.

                  "Anything we can do, we can afford to do", because the government creates the money it spends.

                    @HI_Greens In reality millionaires, billionaires and oligarchs are unsustainable but their puppets in office are twisting the narrative in their favour.

                        @gary_alderson @HI_Greens US govt sucks. UK govt is trying hard to suck as much but isn't quite there yet. Many other governments seem to do quite well.

                          @gary_alderson @HI_Greens less accountable, I think you will find.
                          There is no democratic transparency and they are only beholden to their owners/shareholders.

                            @HI_Greens Everything became unsustainable when the private sector, and their greed, started to much up everything.

                                Accountable??? You're joking.

                                Just look at healthcare in the USA. Fucking look at how much we pay, and our falling life expectancy. Private for-profit healthcare is a sadistic extortion racket, and you can GTFO with this vile nonsense.

                                  stipulating that the fascists are trying to kill pensions and NHS

                                  but, that doesn't mean the pensions, in a society that is ageing, were in fact sustainable without serious reform
