finally, the CBC connects the dots.

as a scientist myself, i agree with this conclusion with all my brain cells and my entire heart. STOP FOSSIL FUEL BURNING — NOT IN SEVERAL DECADES — NOW!! SPEND ALL EIGHTEEN BILLION DOLLARS OF ANNUAL FEDERAL SUBSIDIES OF FOSSIL FUELS ON RENEWABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT INSTEAD.

sorry not sorry for shouting. i have a wildfire smoke headache.

And not just Canada. If it's only Canada. Nothing changes. Nothing.

And there will still be wildfires.

@adub What boils my piss is that we have a current working Green Fuel alternative, developed by Porsche. That works. Why the fuck are we pouring billions into electric cars when a lot of that money could be poured into the Green Fuel which would save cars that already exist on the road.. which IS MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY THAN SCRAPPING PETROL AND DIESEL CARS AND BUYING NEW ELECTRIC ONES

Yeah, stop the mining for fossil fuels. Cancel the contracts. Stop the refining industry. Cancel their permits. Stop all the tax breaks, transport licenses, storage permits, infrastructure financing, insurance (this is a big one in Britain), power plants, and all of it. In whatever order as needed. Also, ration existing fossil fuels so the people can make do for a year or so with what has already been refined. That should be enough time to adjust, and scrap existing gas engines.

@anne_twain @adub I mean there's various studies that show that the will of voters barely factors into political decisionmaking. they are oriented towards the interests of the rich. it's much easier to cater to a small group with outsize influence that literally controls most of the media and can finance political campaigns than to millions of people with much more varied views.

@adub And get these dirty vehicles off the streets. Today, I saw several and if that number is mutlplied by every town and city in this country, it's a serious concern.

I would like to see gas rationing so that stupid people can't go driving around just for fun. Road holidays once per year etc. Will never happen but we have to wean the addicts off this shit.

@adub and ask all the oil companies to pay back subsidies from their profits. With interest. Or seize their assets.

@hub @adub They might try to finance that with more fossil fuel sales. Just nationalize them, pay for everyone's severance below the C suite, self-sabotage drilling equipment in a way that it can't be used again, and then liquidate.

@TrueNorthSpice @Scienceisnotopinions i think the best way to frame this problem is that it's structural/systemic, not so much about individual buying choices.

Norway has almost completely changed purchases of new cars from petrol/diesel to electric, in less than two decades iirc, through government regulation and incentives. btw 🇨🇳 EVs are a lot more affordable than 🇺🇸/🇨🇦 EVs, but the 🇨🇦 government is severely restricting their imports "to protect local industry".

@anne_twain i'm aware. my Dad is an energy policy expert and has been sounding the alarm about fossil fuels since the 1970s, well before it became fashionable

finally, the CBC connects the dots.

as a scientist myself, i agree with this conclusion with all my brain cells and my entire heart. STOP FOSSIL FUEL BURNING — NOT IN SEVERAL DECADES — NOW!! SPEND ALL EIGHTEEN BILLION DOLLARS OF ANNUAL FEDERAL SUBSIDIES OF FOSSIL FUELS ON RENEWABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT INSTEAD.

sorry not sorry for shouting. i have a wildfire smoke headache.

btw i do not need fossil fuels policy or the climate emergency explained to me, thanks all the same.

i am a physics professor & i understand the magnitude of our planetary climate emergency better than most people.

also, my Dad is an energy policy expert who has been sounding the alarm about fossil fuels since the 1970s, long before it became fashionable to do so. i grew up having energy policy conversations around the dinner table & gave feedback on an entire book he wrote when i was a teen

                                        @adub @Scienceisnotopinions
Canada is loosening those restrictions that you mentioned

edit: I agree it is systemic, also we face an almost insurmountable problem....population vs the geographical size of our country. How do we provide adequate, inexpensive, reliable public transit between villages, town and cities? Not to mention, overcoming the challenges of moving goods?

I am sorry to hear this.

Yeah, around the world many governments are cracking down on protesters, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to voice our opposition to the anti-climate, in- the pocket -of -lobbyists pro-oil politicians.
The biggest oil companies, like Exxon have very deep pockets and right wing groups like the Heritage Foundation and the Atlas Network are very powerful global organizations. Not sure how we effectively fight back.
