RSS never tracked you.
Email never throttled you.
Blogs never begged for dopamine.
The old web wasn’t perfect.
But it was yours.@Daojoan
It was respectful. That is what we traded. -

But it was yours.Maybe I'm a dreamer, but I wonder — when will we see a new kind of Internet?
One where the citizens control the servers, free from GAFAM and global powers, built to ensure open sharing for society and our democracies — even if it's imperfect.

@lunareclipse@snug.moe @mitsunee@ieji.de @Daojoan@mastodon.social that matches what i remember, and would indeed be about 15 years ago

@peteramthor @Daojoan I actually liked BBSs. A lot. And Usenet.
@martinlentink @peteramthor @Daojoan
Usenet was my first love.
I started with a First Class client. Oh, suddenly got reminded of the period PowWow existed. -

@Daojoan I used to be surprised by the internet looking immune to the hype cycle.
In recent years, I realized we have just been on the 1st slope and we're approaching the "Peak of inflated expectations".
Once it's a repository of mostly fake generated stuff, we'll quickly reach the "Trough of disillusionment".
Imho, we're not far off. -

@Daojoan I wish the major browsers would bring back built in RSS!
@scottwhat @Daojoan Vivaldi is a major browser with built-in RSS. I really prefer a standalone RSS reader that is configurable. (On Linux) But If you consider the only major browsers Chrome or Mozilla, then you are out if luck. I depend heavily on RSS and will as long as it's an option.

@Daojoan Hi everyone

Please post your top-3 RSS feeds as a reply to this comment

I built this whole blogging engine based on a return to the simpler web. No javascript, RSS feeds with every blog.
Then HN turned evil and the whole site didn’t go anywhere, the email stopped working, everything just fell apart, I couldn’t bring myself to pick the pieces back up

But it was yours.@Daojoan I first came on Internet in my youth when, in France, the famous Skyblogs were declining and seen as "has been".
For years, I thought it was not worth having a blog: what could I say on there to keep readers engaged?
Well, when I finally set up my blog, I decided I wouldn't care about readers' engagement. Heck, I don't even have analytics (well I do, but I have to skim through Nginx's logs). I write what I feel like writing about, when I feel like writing.
Truly liberating.
